April 9: Saint Waltrude
Saint Waltrude (Waudru) of Mons was born around 612 in Cousolre, in northern France, into a noble Frankish family. Her father, Saint Walbert, was an official at the court of Clotaire II of the Merovingians, and her mother, Saint Bertilla of Thuringia, was the daughter of a king.
Waltrude married Count Madelgarius of Soignies, and they had four children, all of whom were later venerated as saints. Once their children were grown and well educated, the couple decided to dedicate themselves to God. Madelgarius, governor of the County of Hainaut and a member of the court of King Dagobert I, had founded the Abbey of Hautmont (Altus Mons) on the banks of the Sambre in 643. He chose that place to become a monk.
Following the advice of her confessor, Waltrude withdrew into solitude on a hill where there was a small oratory. Soon, many people came to the hill seeking prayers and guidance. As a result, Waltrude decided to establish a convent in another location, from which the Belgian city of Mons would later develop. She withdrew from public life and devoted herself entirely to prayer and penance.
Waltrude died on April 9, in either 686 or 688. Her name was added to the Roman Martyrology in 1679. She is the Patron Saint of Mons.
